Warm-Ups, Cool-Downs, Exit Tickets...Oh My!
Lampasas ISD Classroom Management Academy
First impressions are important; when your students walk in your classroom you want them to know that learning is important, their success is your goal, and that class-time is precious and not to be wasted. You also want to frequently check their understanding and provide them with ways to self-assess. Warm-ups and exit tickets are a fantastic way to achieve the above mentioned goals. In order for these tools to be effective the following need to be present:
- Consistency
- Extrinsic motivation
- Pre-planning
- Consistency ( I know this is already on the list...but it is the most important)
Designing Warm-ups
Warm-ups should be purposeful. What are you trying to achieve with the warm-up besides a time to take roll? You could use them to:
- review previous day's lesson
- hook/engage them in to the current lesson
- address areas of weakness from common assessments or benchmark data
- provide a time for the students to generate questions
- pre-assess prior knowledge at the beginning of a unit

Motivation
When trying to establish your warm-up routine, especially with secondary students, extrinsic motivation is key. Consider setting up a classroom economy where kiddos can earn XP, Class Cash, etc. to use for various rewards. These positive points will motivate the kiddos to actually participate in the warm-up instead of talk to their friends. I used to circulate through the isles and stamp kids journals; the first few weeks they received a stamp for simply attempting the warm-up and then I transitioned to stamps for correct responses. These stamps could be used for listening to music during independent work, changing their seat for the day, sitting on the bouncy ball, or for points on grades.
