A Walk Through the House...Task 2
At the beginning of any good house remodeling show there is always an assessment of the project, so let's start with a walk-through. Before we know what areas need work we need to get an over-all sense for the lesson. Your first task is to write a "script" of your lesson pre-makeover. This can be a lesson that takes a day or it can be a small unit...whichever you prefer to tackle is perfect. Your next task is to highlight all of the times you use the word I or the teacher. Now go through the same lesson and circle every time you use the term the student/s. What is the ratio? Who is doing the majority of the thinking and doing? Once you complete this please take a picture and upload it below.
Guest-star, Salvage or Throw Out?
With the new T-Tess model for lesson evaluation, the thinking and doing is the primary role of the student, and the classroom becomes more student-driven and centered.
Your final task in the pre-remodel is to honestly evaluate your lesson using Domains 1 and 2 of T-Tess. T-Tess is a growth model, meaning that even the "best" teacher can find room to grow their craft. Look for the areas in your scripted lesson where there is room for growth; how could you revise those to become more student-centered?

The Research
The Remodeler's Toolbox
Now comes the fun part...using the student-centered lesson planning tool below create a new and improved version of your lesson/unit. The links below might provide you with some ideas to enhance your lesson to shift it towards distinguished on the T-Tess model. You may be asking yourself, how could I have time to do this with every lesson? You don't. However, if you take several lessons/units and apply this thinking to them you will begin to shift the way you approach your on-the-go planning. You will begin to ask yourself, what is the student thinking, doing, sharing, showing, or explaining? Your ultimate goal as a teacher is to help your kids climb higher and push themselves further, but they can only do that if we provide them with the opportunity and the trust to do so.
